A building is not just a manifold of apartments, but an arena of social buildup and a sense of community. Grace Two is one such residential project located in the suburbs of Bhubaneshwar, hidden away from the hustling roads. With the fundamental concept to connect nature with architecture and abide by the principles of vaastu, this project encourages community living amongst an amalgamation of landscape and residential towers.

Driven by the idea to create a buffer between the city hubbub and your home, the lengthy entrance driveway is laden with an avenue of trees and sculptures leading up to the buildings. The site is laid out to orient the two residential towers on the sides of a central landscaped podium that houses two single storey closed structures and one semi-open space. The monotony of linear architecture is broken by inverted angular roofs for these edificies that open to each tower on both sides. A club house, swimming pool, multi-functional lawn and a havan kund graces these structures in the central portion. The traffic-movement along the site is kept at the parking level to maintain a seamless pedestrian friendly podium with all the activities mounted on it for the users.

The towers are expressed as building blocks sitting on top of each other to soften its verticality and bring in a human scale. The vaastu compliant planning gives rise to identical residential apartments in both the towers. The residences are sectioned in a manner that dictates placement of distinct functions in accordance to their use and the light influx required. The living room is positioned to experience the scenic central landscape along with adequate light and ventilation, whereas the bedrooms are placed on the inner side to control the amount of sunlight seeping in. The apartments are connected through corridors with the service duct for vertical circulation.

Bearing in mind the notion of a suburban garden apartment for this residential scheme, breakout spaces have been introduced. Tucked in the midst of corridors, these pockets encourage community interaction. The space has been designed as alternating double heighted alcoves sheltering a landscaped seating area to give an impression of outdoor space on higher floors. The area of refuge in each tower is built with the concept of a floating garden and has been oriented to face the central landscape. A louvered wooden panelling is placed on the face of the refuge area that scours through the entire width of the towers. These not only hold each block together but also act as sun breakers. The wooden panels hide the division mullions from plain sight and create an illusion of a hollow block in the middle of the tower. Including a care-free and greener lifestyle with social engagement, ‘Grace Two’ celebrates human life and offers humble abodes one can call home.
